One of the highlight of Berkshire’s festive calendar is the Hungerford Extravaganza, now in it’s 30th year.
Festivities will kick off at 5pm with a Christmas street fair of stalls, Santa’s grotto, Christmas horse carriage rides, steam engines, festive food and drinks, big wheel and fairground rides and games for the little ones. Entry is free including to an indoor Christmas market in the Town Hall offering crafts, honey, cakes, cheese, chocolates and liquers, jewellery, glasswares, knitted accessories, smoked trout, books, pies, pastries, cosmetics and organic oils.
Dress up for the Best Victorian Costume competition! Judging at 6pm on the Town Hall steps. Categories will be: Best Couple, Best Adult, Best Family, Best Child. Winners will be invited to join the Parade and prizes will be donated by Hungerford Legal & Financial Centre.
New this year are horse-drawn Christmas carriage rides! Cost is just £3 per person and you can pay with cash or cheque. The exact pick-up point will be announced before the night.
Hungerford Christmas Lights are considered by many to be the best in the south of England, adding a sprinkle of fairy dust onto this well-loved market town, and this is a wonderful night to enjoy them.
For some late night Christmas Shopping don’t miss the famous Hungerford Arcade, Hungerford Bookshop’s popular children’s section with experienced booksellers on hand to give out advice and mince pies.
The Extravaganza Parade at 7.30pm will feature the Reading Scottish Pipe Band, Rock Choir, Razzamatazz Theatre Group, the Tin Soldier Juggler, Christmas Fairy on stilts, Community of Hungerford Theatre Group, Hungerford Lanterns and lots more.
The event is funded by donations from local businesses and grants from Greenham Trust, Hungerford Town Council and Town & Manor of Hungerford and due the cost of living crisis and the extra energy costs businesses are facing at the moment the Extravaganza organisers, Hungerford Chamber of Commerce, have made the hard decision not to include fireworks this year as they have shot up in price.
